Vol. 7 No. 1

Meeting of January 19, 1997

On January 19th, Peters' Corps held its first meeting for 1997. Peters' Corps members in attendance were: Bill and Diana Wigham, Bruce Wallace, Justin Kennick, Marcia and Chris Kennick, Mark and Carol Cafazzo, membership applicant Brian Zawodniak, and Dan Moraski.

Subjects discussed during the meeting included an election of officers, new members, the schedule for 1997, BAR dues, unit research, and Peters' Corps and the Internet.

Brian Zawodniak completed all the requirements for admission to Peters Corps under the applicant status provisions of the unit constitution. Congratulations and welcome, Brian!!

Nominations were made and elections were held with the following results:

Old Business:

Treasurer’s Report - The Corps is doing well - recent expenditures being food for events, postage, a musket for the unit, and cloth for making new garments.

Quartermasters’ Report - Mark has provided the Adjutant with a list of Corps’ materiel in his possession.

Sergeant’s Report - The Sergeant indicated that last year’s activities were marvelous and that all events went well. He has procured sear springs for the unit’s new muskets and will harden the frizzens and bring them up to full function.

Adjutant’s Report - Dan reported that he has completed the task of establishing Peters’ Corps on the Internet World Wide Web. He has recently created a Web Site for the Regiment with a link to the B.A.R.’s Web Site. Members got to see the new web site during the meeting. (See the accompanying article later in this newsletter).

New Business:

Sergeant’s Report - The Sergeant has been approached by Warren Stevens to have the Corps join the British Brigade. The Sergeant has asked Mr. Stevens for more information as to the benefits of membership, and is still waiting to hear from Mr. Stevens. The Sergeant also mentioned the grand gathering of North American Loyalist forces to be held at the Zabriski House in River Edge, NJ July 5 - 6, 1997. (See schedule)

Marcia & Diana showed the new material that they recently purchased. This material will be available for purchase by the unit for garments.

Unit sewing sessions will be resumed, the first of the new year to be held at Marcia’s house on 2/9/97 at 1pm.

Diana mentioned that her extensive research into breads has led her to the finding that rye bread was the prevalent variety in New England in our period. We’ll be eating hearty!!

Bruce Wallace donated a full set of women’s clothing (from the clothing formerly worn by Susan Wallace and others) to the unit. The Quartermaster will take possession of these items.

Nancy Moraski also donated some woolen fabric to the unit which will also be available for purchase by the unit for garments.

Quartermasters’ Report - The Quartermaster is highly commended in his efforts at having a Regimental presentation before a U.S. Army Reserve Unit. Mark has tried unceasingly to arrange this event, only to have it fall apart at the last minute by the half-hearted response of some of the Reservists and their proposing a date that will conflict with scheduling. Thanks to Mark for his extensive efforts - they are greatly appreciated!!

Adjutant’s Report - The Adjutant reported that he has not received any material (such as the usual unit "cover sheet" along with his individual household membership sheet) from the BAR Adjutant for our annual payment of BAR dues. Hopefully the BAR Adjutant will get this to our unit as in the past this had to be received by the BAR Adjutant by March 31.

All in all, it was a very interesting and productive meeting which was delightfully enhanced by food and drink provided by our gracious hosts Dan and Nancy Moraski and Diana Wigham’s freshly baked bread.

Respectfully submitted:

Dan Moraski,
Adjutant

Peters' Corps and the Information Superhighway

One of my goals as I explored this technology, was to secure for the unit a place on the Internet where those interested in the 18th Century could find us.

I am happy to report that Peters' Corps now has its own section of the "Electronic Wilderness." In early December 1996, I established a site for the regiment on the "World Wide Web."

The marvelous thing about the World Wide Web is its cross reference ability to establish "footholds" in other areas of the Internet. It will be easier to "find us" in the ever-expanding world of the Internet. Our web site gives us a presence on the Internet where individuals interested in living history, 18th century life, and other aspects of our hobby will be able to "connect" with Peters' Corps and be greeted with information about our unit. Our web site was designed by your humble adjutant to be compatible and also appear seamlessly like a continuation of the well designed B.A.R. web site already created and maintained by Todd Post.

Visitors to our web site will be greeted by text about the unit as well as a lovely picture of his Lordship General John Bourgoyne. A picture of our merry group at the Strong House in Amherst is also there. Along with our mailing address, we have a built-in mechanism to contact Bill and I via e-mail.

At a previous meeting of the membership, I also discussed the possibility of posting our newsletter on-line so that others may share in our efforts. We currently publish about four dozen copies in print form to various individuals on our mailing list. I am now also quite pleased to report that with the advent of our unit home page, this has also now come to pass. Visitors to our web site will be able to view and print a copy of the most recent copy of our "Loyalist Gazette." As the membership previously agreed, posting our newsletter on-line would greatly benefit the Corps as the newsletter would then be available to an audience that potentially numbers in the millions. As was the case with our newsletter in the past, a reminder is repeated now that anyone submitting articles for the newsletter ought to copyright their own material for their own protection if they feel it is warranted.

Although it has taken us some time, we are finally gaining the upper hand on those accursed Committees of Correspondence!

Your humble, obedient servant,

Dan Moraski,
Adjutant
